One institution-wide number hides the gap between first-year and final-year students, between full-time and part-time, and between on-campus and online cohorts, which all engage on different rhythms. First-year engagement is worth isolating on its own, since it is the cohort the group's retention metrics treat as most fragile.
Two instrumentation traps recur. One student who attends many events can inflate the numerator if engagements are counted as events rather than as engaged students, so decide up front whether you are counting acts or people. And enrollment is usually a census-date snapshot while engagement accrues across the term, so a mid-term withdrawal can stay in the denominator while contributing nothing above the line. Fix the window on both sides of the ratio before you compare one term against the next.
