  • Planting or regeneration. Assisted natural regeneration can restore forest cover on land where nothing was planted. It is legitimate restoration and it is not planting, so it belongs on its own line rather than folded into a planted area total.
  • Whose hectares. Land you own, land you lease, land planted by a partner you funded, and hectares represented by credits you purchased are four different claims. Blending them is how the same hectare ends up in two organizations' reports.
  • Voluntary or required. Compensatory planting ordered under a permit is an obligation being discharged. Counting it in the same total as discretionary work overstates the program.

Segment by planting cohort first, because it is the only cut that makes survival legible: comparing this season's fresh planting against a cohort assessed three years on tells you nothing, and blending them tells you less. Then cut by climate and rainfall zone, since establishment on a dry site and establishment on a wet one are different jobs with different failure rates. Species mix deserves its own cut, separating native mixed planting from fast growing single species stands, because those produce very different Biodiversity Impact Score consequences from identical area figures. Tenure and purpose finish the picture: owned against partner delivered, voluntary against compliance mandated.

  • Double counting across funders. A restoration site frequently has several sponsors, an implementing partner and a government program attached to it, and each may report the full site area. Without a shared site register and an explicit share of area attributed to your funding, the same ground appears in several reports and, on aggregation, in yours twice.
  • Infill counted as new area. Replacement planting on a site that failed is normal practice. Recorded as a fresh planting event, it adds the same hectares a second time, so the sites that performed worst inflate the total the most.
  • Polygon overlap between phases. Multi phase projects redraw boundaries between seasons. Overlapping polygons summed across phases produce more planted area than the property contains, and nobody notices because the total is never checked against the parcel.
  • Payment tied to trees in the ground. When contractor payment triggers on planting completion, the incentive runs entirely toward the numerator and away from the survival census. Independent verification of survival, funded separately from the planting contract, is the only reliable correction.
  • Census timing against the season. A survival count taken at the end of the wet season and the same count taken after the dry season describe one site and produce very different answers. Fix the census month in the definition and hold it.
  • Censoring of young cohorts. Sites planted late in the reporting year have not yet reached the assessment age. Excluding them flatters survival, including them depresses it, and switching quietly between the two between periods breaks the trend. State the rule and keep it.
  • No write down after loss. Fire, grazing, drought, illegal clearance and conversion all remove standing area in later years. Unless the register is revisited and the loss deducted, the cumulative figure records every hectare ever planted rather than any hectare still forested, which is precisely the claim readers assume it is making.
  • Reporting lag and restatement. Field data from remote sites arrives seasons after the event, so any period end figure is provisional. Publish it as provisional and restate it openly, because quiet restatement of last year's number is what destroys confidence in the whole series.

One last point about what this metric cannot carry. It is an area measure, and area says nothing about the condition, composition or permanence of what stands on it. If the program's purpose is ecological, the area figure needs a companion measure of what grew, which is where Biodiversity Impact Score earns its place in the Environmental Management KPI group. If the purpose is carbon, the area figure needs a survival and growth record behind it before any removal is claimed against Carbon Footprint.

Reading the Benchmarks for Reforestation and Afforestation Efforts

KPI Depot tracks eight source records against this metric, and the honest starting point is that not one of them measures the quantity in this page's formula, which is the area an organization has reforested or afforested. Four measure national forest area. One measures a promise. Three measure whether seedlings lived. The set is unusually rich, and almost all of that richness is disagreement.

Four of the eight come from the Food and Agriculture Organization, drawn from its Global Forest Resources Assessment, and they are not four observations of one thing. One reports a single reference year picture of forest area worldwide. The other three report change across a decade for Europe, for Asia and for Oceania. Even inside a single source, then, the records mix a stock with a rate, and they mix a global figure with three continental panels whose land use histories run in different directions. The population field on all four is forest area, not planted area, and that word choice is the whole issue: a national forest area figure is net. Loss is subtracted from gain. Commercial plantation expansion, natural regeneration, farmland abandonment and clearance all resolve into a single line, and the planting an individual organization did is invisible inside it. The unit of observation is a country. There is no company anywhere in the data.

The Bonn Challenge / IUCN record is a target rather than an observation, and it is an aggregate of pledges made by national governments, sub-national states and associations toward a horizon near the end of this decade. Three things follow, and each is regularly missed. A commitment is not a completion, and the gap between the two has its own literature. The land in question is described as degraded and deforested lands brought under restoration, and restoration in that framing is far wider than planting, taking in assisted natural regeneration, agroforestry and improved management of existing forest, so the area counted is not the area planted. The entities pledging are governments and associations, so nothing about the figure describes corporate practice. Reading a pledge aggregate as an achieved level is the single most common misuse of this source.

Three records measure survival, which is a different variable with a different denominator, and even they do not agree with each other. The Monarch Butterfly Fund record is a threshold applied to reforested sites, with no geography stated and, more importantly, no time period at all. That missing field decides everything, because survival is meaningless without an age: seedlings assessed at the end of the planting season and seedlings assessed after a full dry season are not the same population. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Southern Research station record is a range rather than a threshold, covering pine seedlings in plantations in a single American state during a historical operational window. Commercial pine silviculture on site prepared ground with improved planting stock is close to the best case for establishment anywhere, and its purpose is merchantable stocking rather than ecological restoration, so it travels badly. The TerraMatch Help Center record is the only one in the set that states a formula: living seedlings over the number of trees planted, expressed as a share. Its population is planted seedlings, its geography is Africa, and its unit is a tree.

Set the metric types side by side and the incompatibility is structural. The set contains averages, a target, thresholds and a range. An average describes what happened somewhere. A target describes what someone promised. A threshold is a bar somebody set, usually the minimum a project must clear to pass. A range describes spread. These answer four different questions, and a customer who lines them up in one comparison is not comparing anything.

The denominators diverge just as far. One set of records divides against the forest area of a country, another against degraded land pledged for restoration, another against a planted site, another against a seedling cohort. Company size is empty on all eight records, and that is not a gap in the data collection. None of these sources observes a company. Sample size is stated only where the unit of observation is a country or a pledging entity, and it is absent on every one of the survival records, so how many sites or projects sit behind those figures is not recoverable. Geography ranges from global, to a continent, to a single state, to unspecified.

There is also a unit problem sitting underneath all of it. This page's formula is expressed in hectares or acres. The survival sources count trees. Converting between the two requires a planting density assumption, and not one of the eight records states a density, so any cross reading between an area figure and a tree figure smuggles in a number nobody published.

Before an external figure is allowed near an internal target, settle five things about it: whether it is gross planting or net of loss, whether it counts trees put in the ground or trees still alive, at what age survival was assessed, whose land it describes, and whether it is a measurement or a promise. On this evidence base, a figure that cannot answer those is not a benchmark for this metric. It is a number about a different variable.

OKRs That Use Reforestation and Afforestation Efforts

Environmental Management's OKR material does not name this metric in any of its worked examples, and that is useful information rather than a gap. The group's objective on leading a significant reduction in the organization's carbon and greenhouse gas impact carries key results on Carbon Footprint, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions, Chemical Waste and ISO 14001 Certification Rate, all of which describe abatement or the governance that sustains it. Reforestation and Afforestation Efforts can be added to that objective, but only if it is written so it cannot substitute for the others. Keep the abatement key results as the objective's spine, add planted area as a separate and clearly labelled removals key result, and make it directional: grow the area verified as surviving at a fixed cohort age, reported by cohort rather than as a cumulative total. And the group's OKR framing opens on biodiversity preservation as one of the pressures that sets environmental management apart from other functions, which is the natural objective for a customer whose planting program exists for ecological reasons rather than accounting ones. Pair the area key result with Biodiversity Impact Score in that case, or the objective gets satisfied by the cheapest available species.

Whichever objective it ladders to, write the key result with its definitions attached: the assessment age, whether the area is gross or net, and whether partner delivered and compliance mandated hectares sit inside or outside the count.
