Introducing Strategy Maps: See Your KPIs as a System, Not a List

Most KPI dashboards are just lists. A column of metrics, each with a number next to it, none of them talking to each other. You know that employee training affects service quality, and that service quality affects customer retention, but the dashboard does not show any of that. It just shows the numbers.

Today we are launching Strategy Maps, and they fix this.

Every KPI group in KPI Depot now has its own Strategy Map. It takes the KPIs in that group and organizes them across the four Balanced Scorecard perspectives, with the cause-and-effect flow running upward: the capabilities you build enable better processes, better processes improve customer outcomes, and customer outcomes drive financial results. You see the logic, not just the metrics.

The part we are most excited about is that the map is yours to change.

You can remove any KPI that does not apply to your business. You can move a KPI to a different perspective when your team sees it differently than our default classification, because these calls involve judgment and you know your organization better than we do. You can add your own custom KPIs that are not in our database at all. By the time you are done, the map reflects your strategy, not a generic template.

We built this because subscribers kept asking a question our database could not answer: out of all these KPIs, which ones should I actually track? A flat list cannot answer that. A strategy map can, because it shows you where the gaps are.

Strategy Maps are available to all paid KPI Depot subscribers starting today. Open any KPI group and look for the Strategy Map view. Start with your own function and see how your current metrics spread across the four perspectives. The gaps tend to be the interesting part.
